Ghana Suspends Diplomatic Relations with the “rasd”: A Major Setback for polisario

The Republic of Ghana decided on January 7, 2025, to suspend its diplomatic relations with the fictitious entity of the “RASD,” a separatist movement supported by the Algerian military junta in an attempt to detach the Kingdom of Morocco from its Southern provinces. This decision marks a new setback for the Polisario Front and its allies, as an increasing number of African countries and nations around the world align themselves with Morocco’s position.
In an official statement issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, this decision was communicated to the Moroccan authorities, the African Union, and the United Nations. This diplomatic gesture from the Republic of Ghana has been hailed as tangible support for Morocco’s efforts to reach a peaceful and lasting solution for the Sahara. This support is viewed as an affirmation of Morocco’s key role in the region and its clear stance on the sovereignty of the Moroccan Sahara.
The impact of this decision is all the more significant since the Republic of Ghana had recognized the “RASD” in 1979, a time when positions on the Sahara issue were still largely divided. Since then, Moroccan diplomacy, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, has successfully redefined the international perception of the conflict by focusing on the proposal of autonomy for the Sahara, a solution deemed fair and realistic by an increasing number of countries.
The announcement of the break in diplomatic relations with the “RASD” is therefore a strong signal sent by Ghana, demonstrating a new dynamic in Africa, where several countries have recently taken similar actions. To date, 46 nations, including 13 African countries, have broken or suspended their relations with Polisario since 2000, a trend that has intensified as the international community has taken note of Morocco’s efforts to secure a solution that benefits the entire region.
Ghana’s decision is thus part of a growing context of solidarity with Morocco, and it is likely that other countries will follow suit in the coming months. As international support for Morocco strengthens, the polisario front and its allies must face increasing isolation on the global stage, with significant geopolitical implications for the future of the Moroccan Sahara.
