Morocco reaffirms its commitment to collective African action in service of the continent’s interests and its citizens

Morocco remains firmly committed to unified African cooperation, focused on defending the continent’s vital interests and the well-being of its people. During the African Union (AU) Summit in February 2025, discussions centered on major themes, including peace and security, economic integration, healthcare management, and climate change, along with the renewal of the AU Commission.

As in previous years, Morocco’s participation was marked by significant contributions in various strategic panels and meetings. Morocco notably took part in the AU Peace and Security Council debates, where it proposed and secured unanimous approval for a humanitarian truce in Sudan during the holy month of Ramadan, facilitating unrestricted access to humanitarian aid. Similarly, during a high-level meeting on health financing, the Kingdom announced substantial financial support to strengthen healthcare security across Africa.

Since rejoining the African Union in 2017, Morocco has established itself as a key player through a proactive and enlightened Royal Vision. This leadership has been reflected in strategic appointments, such as His Majesty King Mohammed VI being named AU Leader on Migration in 2018, and the establishment of the African Migration Observatory in Rabat. Additionally, Moroccan initiatives in climate change mitigation, launched at the 2016 African Action Summit, continue to serve as a model for other African nations.

On the diplomatic front, Morocco has been elected twice to the AU Peace and Security Council (2018-2020 and 2022-2025), during which it presided over this key body on three occasions. The Kingdom’s efforts have notably led to the adoption of the Tangier Declaration, a pivotal step in reinforcing the integrated approach linking peace, security, and development across Africa.

As part of efforts to strengthen African institutions, Morocco has implemented a training program for AU electoral observers, contributing to the democratic process on the continent. Furthermore, several Moroccan experts hold strategic positions within AU structures, including the role of Director General of the AU Commission, as well as leadership positions in other key organs.

With its deep-rooted institutional presence and unwavering commitment to Africa’s advancement, Morocco remains a fundamental actor within the African Union. It will continue working to consolidate the organization’s administrative and financial governance while countering efforts to hinder the reform process. This approach aligns with the Royal Vision, which places peace, security, and development at the heart of Africa’s priorities while ensuring the continent’s influential presence on the global stage.
