Morocco Strengthens Its Parliamentary Leadership at the 150th UIP Assembly in Uzbekistan

The city of Tashkent is hosting the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a key event for global political dialogue. Under the theme “Parliamentary Action in Favor of Social Development and Social Justice,” this edition is being held in an international context marked by growing inequalities and multilateral challenges. Morocco, faithful to its active foreign policy, has responded with a high-level delegation.

Led by the President of the House of Councillors, Sidi Mohamed Ould Errachid, the Moroccan delegation not only attended the opening ceremony but also participated in crucial meetings with Arab, African, and Islamic geopolitical groups. Its involvement in these spaces strengthens Morocco’s role as a bridge between various regions and as a key player in parliamentary multilateralism.

Founded in 1889, the IPU currently brings together over 180 national parliaments and plays a central role in parliamentary diplomacy. This forum provides Morocco with an opportunity to express its political priorities, share its experience in social development, and advocate for a more just world order. In a fragmented global landscape, its participation highlights its commitment to promoting consensus and international cooperation.

During the Assembly’s proceedings, parliamentarians will address urgent issues related to peace, security, and sustainable development. In addition to debates and resolutions, workshops are being organized on climate change, women’s health, and preventive diplomacy. Morocco, which has initiated social reforms in several of these areas, is taking advantage of the event to share its progress and position itself as a model of transformation in the Global South.

The adoption of a final document with political recommendations will mark the closure of this parliamentary summit. Morocco hopes that these conclusions will strengthen collective commitment to the challenges of the 21st century, highlighting the role of parliaments as drivers of social inclusion and stability.

Morocco’s active presence in Tashkent is part of a coherent and ascending parliamentary diplomacy strategy. Rabat uses this channel, complementary to its classical diplomacy, to defend its strategic interests, particularly its territorial integrity, and to strengthen its international image as a dialogue-oriented country committed to human rights and equitable development.
