Bloomberg: Moroccan Sahara, an El Dorado for Foreign Investors

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Bloomberg published an article describing the Moroccan Sahara as an investment paradise for foreign investors, particularly in the ports, infrastructure, energy, and tourism sectors. This dynamic is driven by a favorable business environment and Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to secure global support for its sovereignty over the territory.

The article highlights the $1.2 billion Atlantic Port of Dakhla project, which is transforming a desert zone into a key trade hub connecting the Sahara to European and Latin American shores. Wind farms are also emerging, intended to power Morocco’s stadiums during the 2030 World Cup and potentially supply electricity to Europe.

With one of the world’s highest capacity factors for wind and solar energy, the region aims to become a major producer of green hydrogen and ammonia. The new port will focus on West African markets, serving as a platform for processing and exporting natural resources.

Infrastructure-related investments in the region are projected to reach $10 billion, reflecting the growing interest of international investors. The region targets $40 billion in investment by 2040, aiming to become a main hub for transformative projects focused on West African markets and green energy production.

The article also notes that the U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara—followed by France—and Spain’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan have significantly boosted investor confidence.

Dakhla is emerging as a strategic gateway to the Sahel region. Bloomberg reports that Morocco is in talks with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to establish logistical links with the port of Dakhla.

According to Riccardo Fabiani, North Africa Project Director at the International Crisis Group, the Sahara has shifted from being a disputed and radioactive zone for investors to a normalized region attracting increasing capital flows. As Bloomberg puts it: “Dakhla is an El Dorado for investors.”
