French Senate Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara and Calls on Algeria to Cooperate

On June 12, 2025, Christian Cambon, special envoy of the French Senate President for international relations, reaffirmed in Rabat France’s unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, while urging Algeria to adopt a constructive stance. This statement comes amid ongoing tensions between Algiers and Paris on the issue.
During a meeting with the Moroccan Foreign Minister and a French parliamentary delegation, Cambon emphasized that France refuses to be drawn into a spiral of repeated provocations. He stressed the importance of peaceful dialogue, noting that France does not intend to oppose Algerian interests but rather hopes for a beneficial rapprochement between Rabat and Algiers.
The French senator specified that it is now up to Algeria to act responsibly and accept the consequences of France’s support for Moroccan sovereignty over its Southern provinces. Cambon reaffirmed that France maintains a message of peace and refuses to engage in an escalation that would benefit no one.
Furthermore, Christian Cambon highlighted the commitment of French parliamentary diplomacy to support Morocco, notably by promoting the autonomy plan as a realistic solution to convince hesitant countries. He believes this project remains the only viable path to lasting peace in a region marked by multiple crises.
The French representative also stressed that this position is official and consistent with French policy, citing recent statements by the Senate President during his visit to Morocco, affirming that recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara is a firm and stable political line.
Finally, Cambon praised the work of the France-Morocco Friendship Group, a key player always committed to the Moroccan position despite the diversity of political opinions among its members. This group plays an essential role in strengthening ties between the two countries.
