Attacks on Moroccan security institutions: the complicit silence of political elites

For several months now, Morocco’s security institutions have been the target of virulent smear campaigns, coordinated and amplified through digital platforms that spread disinformation and make baseless accusations. These attacks are far from trivial: they aim to symbolically undermine key pillars of the State and erode public trust in those who embody stability and order.

What is most concerning, beyond the verbal violence and groundless allegations, is the near-total silence from political elites and parties. Where one would expect clear positions in defense of institutions, there is instead an uncomfortable silence, as if this escalation had no impact on the national balance.

Even more troubling, some of those who have long advocated for ethical governance and public service reform seem to ignore these targeted attacks—as if the campaign against security institutions did not concern them. This silence may, rightly or wrongly, be seen as tacit approval or political opportunism.

In this context, institutions continue to fulfill their mission with rigor: investigations, legal proceedings, and respect for the rule of law. But these technical measures remain insufficient unless accompanied by a clear political discourse and a responsible public debate—one that distinguishes between constructive criticism and strategies of destabilization.

The moment is serious. The political class, in all its diversity, must assume its historical responsibility: to protect the institutions, not out of blind loyalty, but as a duty. This is not about defending individuals, but about safeguarding the balance of a country that some seek to weaken from within.

Those who launch personal attacks on security officials not only question their integrity, but also send a harmful message to society as a whole. Allowing such rhetoric to spread unchecked undermines the credibility of public action and drains political engagement of its meaning.
