Morocco Denounces at the UN Algeria’s Hijacking of the Political Process

On June 12, 2025, Majda Moutchou, Morocco’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, denounced before the Committee of 24 that the Western Sahara political process is being held hostage by Algeria’s “obstinacies.” She stressed that this prolonged blockage is mainly due to Algeria’s silence and lack of transparency, as it funds separatist groups such as the Polisario Front, in violation of UN resolutions.
During the Committee meetings held from June 9 to 20, Moutchou recalled that 118 countries, including three Security Council members, firmly support Morocco’s Autonomy Plan introduced in 2007 by King Mohammed VI, considered the only serious, credible, and realistic solution for lasting peace in the region. Despite this, Algeria maintains a political blockade that seriously jeopardizes the UN process.
The Moroccan representative denounced Algeria’s selective attitude, accusing it of diverting the political process to serve a regional instability strategy. She also pointed out that the main cause of the blockage is the lack of cooperation and transparency, prolonging the crisis for decades.
Majda Moutchou emphasized the success of the Autonomy Plan, which has enabled significant investments and economic development in key cities of Moroccan Sahara such as Dakhla and Laayoune. She explained that this dynamic is based on a realistic approach that convinces more and more countries worldwide.
At the local level, the representative affirmed that the Sahrawi population enjoys all civil rights and actively participates in national, regional, and local elections, as well as social and cultural processes. This participation, she stated, illustrates the Sahrawis’ adherence to the Moroccan institutional framework, which should be recognized.
In conclusion, Majda Moutchou urged the Committee of 24 to take a courageous stance in favor of Morocco’s autonomy initiative, in accordance with UN principles, reminding that this proposal remains the only viable peaceful solution to resolve the Western Sahara conflict.
