Algeria fabricates false “convergence” with Turkey on the Moroccan Sahara

According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a supposed “convergence of views” with Turkey on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara was established following the visit of Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Berhantin Duran to Algiers this week. However, the lack of official confirmation from Turkey casts serious doubt on the truthfulness of this claim.

The Algerian statement indicates that Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of the Algerian Ministry, and Berhantin Duran co-chaired the second session of bilateral political consultations, highlighting the “strength of historical ties” between the two countries and reporting deep political and economic cooperation, especially in investment and technology.

The text mentions a “convergence of views” on several regional and international issues, including “the situation in Palestine, the Middle East, the Sahara, and the Sahel region.”

However, according to local media, the meeting between Duran and Algerian State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf omitted any reference to the Moroccan Sahara, focusing solely on the Palestinian, Gulf, and Sahel issues.

Furthermore, neither the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Turkish Embassy in Algiers has communicated the results of this visit, with no information published on their official channels. This Turkish silence contrasts sharply with the Algerian claim and raises questions about the reality and scope of this supposed agreement on the Moroccan Sahara.

Analysts suggest that this unilateral announcement could be an attempt by Algiers to portray Turkey as a supporter of the separatist narrative of the Polisario Front, which Algeria hosts.

However, Algeria is the main promoter of creating a fictitious entity, a position Turkey has not explicitly adopted. The lack of an official statement from Ankara leaves open the possibility that Algeria is greatly exaggerating the level of agreement between the two countries on this sensitive issue.
