The Algerian protest movement is reborn with the ‘#Manich Radi’ movement

Algeria has recently witnessed the resurgence of a wave of protest, embodied by a new popular campaign called “Manich Radi” (“I am not satisfied”), which reflects the cry of a population oppressed under the Algerian military junta. This movement, primarily driven by the youth, denounces the lack of prospects and the precarious living conditions, while promises of renewal have not led to structural changes.
Although the Hirak, which once symbolized the hope for change, seems to be losing momentum, the discontent persists and has intensified in the face of growing repression by the regime. The post-Hirak management has not brought about substantial transformations, leaving the political and military elites to retain their power in an authoritarian manner. The promises made by the authorities, notably by the current president, have deepened the disillusionment of the Algerians, confronted with a status quo that is reflected in a rollback of individual freedoms and a deterioration of social justice.
The #Manich Radi movement, distinct from the Hirak in its decentralized and digital approach, uses social media to spread its message. Far from street protests, this campaign focuses on online mobilizations, exerting significant media pressure on the Algerian authorities. Humor and sarcasm have become effective protest tools, allowing the movement to attract a broad audience and expose the absurdity of the current political system.
One of the driving forces behind this renewed protest is the difficult economic context. Despite Algeria’s vast oil resources, the population continues to suffer from an unbearable cost of living. The rising prices of basic goods have plunged many families into poverty. Unemployment, especially among the youth, remains a major issue, fueling the exodus of talent and the hopes of emigration. Government measures, such as recent salary increases, remain insufficient in the face of rising prices.
On Sunday, December 22, the Algerian military regime launched a large-scale operation that led to the arrest of many militants involved in the #Manich Radi movement. These militants expressed their rejection of the precarious living conditions imposed on the Algerian people under the authoritarian regime of the military, accused of monopolizing the country’s wealth and resources.
The #Manich Radi movement embodies the voice of a youth seeking real change, structural reforms, and social justice. However, the ongoing repression by the regime, with arbitrary arrests of protesters and journalists, shows the desire to silence any form of dissent. The challenge for the Algerian authorities now is to address the legitimate aspirations of their population, or risk seeing this protest movement turn more radical.
