The new Agadir-Dakar maritime route: an asset for Moroccan trade

Morocco has recently inaugurated a new maritime route connecting Agadir to Dakar, an initiative that promises to strengthen trade exchanges with Sub-Saharan Africa. This project, the result of a partnership with the British company Atlas Marine, aims to improve the country’s maritime infrastructure. The maritime link provides an effective alternative to road transport, particularly for perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables, which require quick deliveries to maintain their freshness.

This new maritime connection addresses several challenges faced by land transport. Rising costs, security concerns, and frequent delays at borders have prompted professionals to seek alternative solutions. Driss Bouti, president of CGEM-Sous Massa, emphasized that this partnership is a direct response to these logistical concerns, enabling smoother and faster movement of goods between Morocco and its African partners.

Atlas Marine is committed to using vessels capable of transporting not only trucks of goods and their drivers but also passengers. This will facilitate not only the transport of goods but also the mobility of people in the region. By integrating maritime transport into its logistics strategy, Morocco strengthens its position as a key player in continental trade while diversifying its trade routes.

This initiative could also stimulate international investments in the Moroccan maritime sector. The port of Agadir, already well-established, is part of a dynamic of innovation and sustainability. In November 2023, the port of Tangier Med was ranked among the top 20 container ports in the world, reflecting the increasing efficiency of Moroccan port infrastructures. The new maritime route is expected to further enhance this status by attracting more trade partners and investments.

By reducing the carbon footprint associated with land travel and facilitating exchanges, Morocco positions itself as a bridge between Africa and Europe. The Agadir-Dakar maritime route is not just a logistical advancement but also represents a step towards stronger economic integration within the African continent.
