Morocco Becomes the Top Tourist Destination in Africa

Morocco reached a significant milestone in 2024, registering a record number of 17.4 million tourists, a 20% increase compared to the previous year. This figure greatly exceeds the expectations of the government’s roadmap, which had set this target for 2026. Not only has Morocco surpassed Egypt, but it has also positioned itself as a key player in African tourism, with a 35% rise in arrivals compared to 2019, before the pandemic. This success is a testament to the sustained efforts to promote the country as an essential destination.

The Ministry of Tourism attributes this growth to a series of strategic investments in the sector, particularly in infrastructure improvements and the diversification of tourism offerings. Furthermore, the share of foreign tourists increased by 23%, reaching 8.8 million, while Moroccans living abroad (MRE) represented 8.6 million visits, with a 17% increase. This balanced distribution between the two segments highlights Morocco’s growing appeal to a diverse international clientele, while maintaining a strong connection with its expatriate citizens.

The central role of Marrakech, Casablanca, and other iconic sites has contributed to attracting millions of visitors in search of exotism, culture, and heritage. The resumption of direct flights, especially between São Paulo and Casablanca, has strengthened the kingdom’s international visibility, particularly in South America. Additionally, the involvement of Brazilian tour operators demonstrates Morocco’s growing influence outside of Europe and the Middle East.

Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor praised this success, emphasizing the importance of King Mohammed VI’s strategic vision, which has revitalized this key sector for the national economy. She also congratulated the public and private stakeholders for their commitment to making Moroccan tourism shine globally. The 2026 target has already been reached two years ahead of schedule, and the country continues to prepare for new challenges, especially in terms of sustainable tourism management and the ongoing improvement of service quality.
