The Canarian Saharawi Forum condemns the Polisario Front’s threats against Mauritania and calls for stronger international action

The Canarian Saharawi Forum has strongly condemned the recent threats made by the Polisario Front, particularly those directed at Mauritania following the opening of a new border post in southern Morocco. These threats, issued by Polisario leader Bachir Mustapha Sayed, represent not only an unacceptable act of intimidation but also a new escalation of tensions in the region.
This humanitarian NGO, based in Las Palmas and supportive of the Moroccan autonomy plan, warned that these actions pose a direct threat to regional stability. It emphasized that the international community, particularly the United Nations, must take stronger measures to prevent further violence and ensure stability. The organization also called on the world’s major powers to take decisive action against those fueling the conflict and instability in the region, highlighting the urgency of increasing international pressure to establish peace. In addition to the threats against Mauritania, the Canarian Saharawi Forum reiterated its call for the recognition of the Polisario Front’s terrorist past.
The organization reminded that this group has been responsible for numerous terrorist actions, including attacks on Canarian fishermen and workers from the “Fos Bucraa” company. These actions, widely forgotten by some sectors, had tragic consequences and underline the risk posed by the Polisario to regional stability and international security. The Forum is calling for the immediate inclusion of the Polisario Front on the U.S. Department of State’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, particularly with the possible return of the Trump administration, support for Morocco’s position on Western Sahara has strengthened.
This renewed support could lead to significant policy changes, including the formal recognition of the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. The Canarian Saharawi Forum hopes that this will finally allow justice for the victims of the Polisario’s violent actions, many of whom were Canarians simply working in the region. The organization expressed hope that these victims will be honored and their memory preserved for their sacrifices in the pursuit of regional peace.
The Canarian Saharawi Forum also expressed concern about the human rights situation in the Tindouf refugee camps in southern Algeria. These camps, initially intended to be temporary shelters for Sahrawi refugees, have become lawless territories controlled by the Polisario Front. The Forum has condemned the repression and systematic human rights violations in these camps, where dissenting voices are silenced through violence and fear.
Finally, the Canarian Saharawi Forum condemned the growing insecurity in the region, highlighting recent events such as the abduction of a Spanish citizen in southern Algeria. Although this incident occurred far from the Tindouf camps, it highlights the increasing risk of terrorist activities in the region. With the Polisario Front unable to effectively control the camps, the Forum warns that the region is becoming a fertile ground for extremist groups and calls on national and international authorities to act swiftly to ensure peace and stability for all peoples in the region, including the Canary Islands.
