Albania supports Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a credible basis for resolving the Sahara conflict

Albania reaffirmed this Saturday (01.03.2025) its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, considering it a “serious and credible basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This position was expressed in a joint declaration signed by the Albanian Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.

In this declaration, Tirana acknowledges the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco and commends the serious and credible efforts made by the Kingdom within the framework of the United Nations to reach a solution accepted by all concerned parties. This recognition aligns with a growing international momentum in favor of Morocco’s autonomy plan.

The two ministers also reiterated their support for the political process led under the auspices of the United Nations and for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to reach a peaceful and mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict. They emphasized their commitment to the Security Council’s resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 adopted in 2024.

Albania’s support thus strengthens the wave of international recognition in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat. This position is part of a growing trend among European and international countries acknowledging the relevance of the Moroccan solution as a viable and realistic alternative.

Driven by the diplomatic momentum of King Mohammed VI, this new Albanian endorsement illustrates the effectiveness of Morocco’s efforts to consolidate its position on the international stage. It also highlights the increasing isolation of separatist claims and the legitimacy of the autonomy project under Moroccan sovereignty as the only viable solution to the conflict.
