Morocco Assumes the Presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the Fourth Time

On March 1, 2025, Morocco assumed the presidency of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), marking a significant moment in Moroccan diplomacy. This presidency, which continues under the Kingdom’s commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in Africa, is part of a series of initiatives to strengthen continental cooperation. Morocco, under the visionary leadership of King Mohammed VI, positions itself as a key player in addressing Africa’s challenges.

Morocco’s presidency of the PSC for March 2025 is set to feature crucial discussions. Among the main issues on the agenda are the challenges related to climate change, which directly impact the stability of many African countries, as well as the persistent security challenges across the continent. Morocco will also emphasize the eradication of terrorism and violent extremism as essential drivers for lasting peace in Africa. Additionally, the agenda for women, peace, and security will be a central pillar of discussions, highlighting the importance of including women in peace processes.

Another priority of this presidency will be accelerating the return of countries such as Burkina Faso, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sudan to the African Union. These informal consultations aim to facilitate their reintegration into African institutions, thereby strengthening unity and solidarity within the AU. Furthermore, a ministerial summit will be held to discuss the impacts of artificial intelligence on governance, peace, and security in Africa, a topic that has become crucial in the digital age.

Morocco assumes the presidency of the PSC for the fourth time, after holding the role in February 2024, October 2022, and September 2019. This continuity in leadership is a testament to Morocco’s unwavering commitment to Africa’s stability. The presidency also acknowledges Morocco’s diplomatic efforts across the continent, particularly in mediation, conflict prevention, and strengthening Africa’s capabilities.

Finally, Morocco’s presidency will be guided by the royal vision of joint African action. This vision places the interests of African peoples and the noble causes of the continent at the heart of the AU’s agenda. Under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, Morocco continues to play a decisive role in fostering a more peaceful, stable, and prosperous African future.
