Mahjouba El Akal’s Conviction in Casablanca Jerando’s Accomplice: A Case of Defamation on Social Media

On March 13, 2025, the Casablanca Court of First Instance delivered a verdict against Mahjouba El Akal, sentencing her to two and a half years in prison and a fine of 2,000 dirhams. According to the Barlamane newspaper, the defendant, who was in pretrial detention, was found guilty of several charges, including contempt of the judiciary, spreading false information for defamatory purposes, and publishing photos of third parties without their consent. She was also tried for complicity with Hicham Jerando, a controversial figure in this case.

During the trial, debates highlighted Mahjouba El Akal’s role in spreading content that damaged the reputation of several individuals. The court emphasized the seriousness of these actions, considering them a deliberate attempt to cause harm. The evidence presented was deemed overwhelming, leading the court to impose a significant sentence.

This ruling reflects the Moroccan judiciary’s firm stance against abuses committed on social media, particularly defamatory campaigns targeting public or private figures. The decision aims to establish a clear boundary between freedom of expression and defamation, a growing concern in the digital age. It also aligns with broader efforts to protect institutions and individuals from coordinated online attacks.

The Mahjouba El Akal case adds to a series of recent judicial decisions demonstrating the authorities’ determination to strengthen the legal framework governing the use of digital platforms. This case underscores the challenges posed by the massive spread of unverified information and its consequences on the lives of those affected.
