Dominica reaffirms support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a consensual solution to the Sahara conflict

On May 30, 2025, the Commonwealth of Dominica reiterated its full support for Morocco’s autonomy plan to resolve the conflict in the Sahara, describing it as a viable “consensual solution” in line with international law.

During a regional seminar of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C24), recently held in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, Ambassador Philbert Aaron, Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, emphasized that the Moroccan proposal aligns fully with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant resolutions of both the Security Council and the General Assembly.

Aaron voiced his country’s strong support for the UN-led political process aimed at achieving a “realistic, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable” solution to the regional dispute. He highlighted the key role of the UN Secretary-General in advancing negotiations, as well as the efforts of his personal envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in reactivating the political process.

The ambassador also called on all involved parties — Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the “Polisario” — to remain committed to the roundtable process, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2703.

Taking the opportunity, Dominica’s representative praised Morocco’s development efforts in the Sahara, noting that these initiatives have significantly improved living conditions in the region through the modernization of infrastructure and health, education, and housing services.

Finally, he welcomed Morocco’s continued commitment to the ceasefire and military agreements, stating that this contributes positively to regional peace and stability.
