Open letter to the Sahrawi elite: For collective reflection at a historic crossroads

The Sahrawi Movement for Peace appeals to the Sahrawi elite at a critical juncture. After years of deadlock, sincere and responsible debate is urgently needed in light of a war reignited without a clear strategic vision.
Since 2020, the unilateral resumption of conflict by the Polisario has led to setbacks on the ground due to Morocco’s technological military superiority. Algeria is reluctant to continue providing military support, while Mauritania is gradually distancing itself.
Diplomatically, the Polisario faces growing isolation. Several countries have frozen ties with the self-proclaimed SADR, while Morocco’s autonomy plan is gaining support from major powers like the UK, Ghana, and the United States.
The Tindouf camps are collapsing under hardship. Insecurity, shortages, and frustration prevail, while the UN envoy Staffan de Mistura has failed to restart a stalled political process that grows more obsolete by the day.
At this turning point, we call on Sahrawi tribal, political, and intellectual leaders to open a clear and inclusive dialogue. It is time to think collectively about the people’s interest — not factional gains or rigid ideologies.
History shows the tragic fate of some armed movements. There is no more room for illusion — only for realistic, fair, and lasting solutions, inspired by successful models of peaceful coexistence elsewhere in the world.
Only through unity, moral courage, and abandoning sterile tactics can an honourable political outcome emerge — one that respects Sahrawi dignity and fulfils the aspirations of a people who have sacrificed far too much for far too long.
