Guatemala Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Sahara

The Republic of Guatemala has reiterated its clear and unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, stating that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 is “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for reaching a lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
This position was expressed in Rabat by Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, following his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. During a joint press conference, the Guatemalan diplomat praised Morocco’s efforts to reach a final settlement of the conflict, in full respect of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Carlos Ramiro Martinez also emphasized his country’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at a realistic, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable solution. Guatemala believes that Morocco’s autonomy plan fully meets these criteria and represents a serious path toward peace and regional stability.
Both ministers reaffirmed their countries’ shared commitment to upholding the fundamental principles of international law, especially those relating to state sovereignty and territorial integrity. This alignment reflects a strategic convergence between Rabat and Guatemala on key regional and global issues.
It is worth recalling that Guatemala was the first Latin American country to open a general consulate in Dakhla, in December 2022. This strong diplomatic move highlights the strength of bilateral relations and the concrete recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
Guatemala’s renewed declaration further strengthens international momentum in favor of Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which enjoys broad global support, and underscores the growing isolation of separatist agendas on the international stage.
