Mauritania raises military alert to counter Polisario terrorist movements

Following the armed attack targeting the city of Es-Smara in southern Morocco, attributed to militias of the Polisario Front, the Mauritanian army has launched significant security measures to strengthen surveillance along the common border with the Kingdom of Morocco. This initiative aims to prevent any infiltration of armed elements and contain the spread of tensions within Mauritanian territory.

Mauritanian sources report that meetings and assessments are underway within the Second Military Region of the national army, in response to warnings about the risk that certain armed or separatist groups may exploit the vast desert border area to move or carry out preventive operations.

On the ground, it is emphasized that the military command is about to raise the security alert level and reinforce coordination between units deployed along the border, with particular attention to unofficial crossing points that could be used by the Polisario or criminal networks.

These measures come amid growing concern that some areas near Mauritania’s northwestern border could become secondary corridors used by armed militias or smugglers, due to the fragile security situation linked to the conflict.

These measures are expected to translate into strengthened field actions, including increased patrols, expanded intelligence coverage, and deployment of additional surveillance units, to ensure stability within Mauritanian territory and prevent any direct or indirect impact from regional tensions.
